Future First has been endorsed by PRIME as a charity partner due to Future First’s social mobility programmes with Taylor Wessing LLP which helps disadvantaged young people overcome barriers and develop the skills needed to succeed in the legal sector.

In order to properly tackle deep-rooted social mobility problems, it is vital that corporate-charity partnerships look beyond standalone events and implement strategic programmes to ‘move the needle’ on this complex and multi-faceted problem. Future First and Taylor Wessing’s ‘Aspiration to Application’ programme is such an initiative and one that has been publicly celebrated by the Business Charity Awards as a finalist in the best legal partnership category.

The programme’s activities open up Taylor Wessing’s offices to young people from all over London, most of whom have never met someone in a job they themselves would like to do in the future. Throughout the programme students have the unique opportunity to receive authentic careers advice from role models in the firm whilst developing their employability skills in a professional setting. With law continuing to be a sector dominated by privately educated employees, the partnership’s long-lasting social mobility programme removes the barriers for diverse young people to one day enter into employment in law.

In 2019, over 30 Taylor Wessing employees participated in mentor training with Future First, developing the communication skills and mentoring strategies needed to successfully support young people to set goals and raise aspirations. Both mentors and mentees reported their skills and knowledge had developed as a result of the programme, as well as a genuine enjoyment of the mentoring experience.

“The mock interviews were helpful as I got feedback on how to improve my skills”

“Being able to talk to a professional about their work and gain insights was invaluable”

“My mentor helped me understand how to network and gain opportunities specifically for the career I’m interested in”

“Great guidance and structure provided by the Future First team”

“Very rewarding experience overall!”

PRIME is an alliance of law firms across the UK, committed to improving access to the legal profession. Every firm involved in PRIME makes the PRIME Commitment: a commitment to offering experiences in the legal sector for all young people no matter their background. PRIME believes it takes a village to make real social change – and even though they are only changing the legal sector, it takes more than just law firms to make it happen. PRIME wouldn’t happen without the work of other charities, social mobility networks and foundations.

Future First’s longstanding collaboration with Taylor Wessing enables students to gain the knowledge, skills and practical advice needed for a career in the legal sector. We’re delighted that this has been recognised by PRIME and are excited about the possibility to extend our programme to the wider legal sector.
